Faeces (poo) is temporarily stored in the rectum and expelled from the body via the anus. An anal fissure is a tear or split in the lining of the anus (anal mucosa). The symptoms and signs include pain when passing a bowel motion and bright red blood from the anus.

The problem is common in children younger than one year, and affects around eight out of 10 babies. A person’s susceptibility to anal fissures tends to decline with age. Common causes in adults include constipation and trauma to the anus (such as a difficult childbirth).

Around half of cases heal by themselves with proper self-care and avoidance of constipation. However, healing can be a problem if the pressure of passing bowel motions constantly reopens the fissure. Treatment options include surgery.

  ANAL FISSURE TREATMENT AT HOME

Anal fissures are a very common problem across the world. They cause considerable morbidity and adversely affect quality of life.

1- St. John's Wort Oil or Cream: Consult your doctor first, if you will use St. John's wort. If you have a serious condition, it is best to consult with a doctor for help. Some conditions might be warning signs of other illnesses that only a medical professional can accurately diagnose.

Never use a medical and herbal medicines during treatment.

-St. John's wort oil has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. So it's a good germ killer. Since ancient times it has been known to heal wounds quickly.

-Gently rub St. John's Wort oil on the affected area.

-Repeat several times a day until the Anal Fissure heal completely. (About two weeks)

-You can add 4-5 drops of tea tree oil to increase the effect of St. John's Wort oil.

2- Aloe Vera Cream: Aloe vera cream is an effective and safe form of treatment for acute anal fissure. It can also affect positively the healing of chronic anal fissure wound, pain and hemorrhaging upon defection.

You apply the aloe vera cream with the tip of the index finger to your wounds three times daily.

3- Fresh Aloe Vera: You can use an aloe vera plant to make yourself rectal suppositories. Cut off a piece of the leaf, then cut away the green leaf and inside yellowish layer (it’s bitter and astringent), leaving only the clear inside meat of the plant. Insert this fresh aloe vera  (cut to the desired length and width) into your rectum (your fingernail should be short to avoid irritation.) and leave it there until your next bowel movement, when it will come out naturally. You may need to wrap the cut aloe vera in cellophane and freeze it first to make it firmer and easier to insert.

If you insert this suppository before bed, then the aloe vera has all night (hopefully) to work its healing action. Re-apply after every bowel movement. Aloe Barbedensis is a good species of aloe vera with proven healing action.

Make sure you’ve washed your hands thoroughly before application and never stick the same, soiled finger back into your pot of salve.

4- Poultice Nettle: Nettle is one of the most effective herbs for cure of anal fissure.
Formic acid in the nettle is a good anti-inflammatory.
With this feature a poultice nettle, can treat infection by killing bacteria and drawing out the infection.
While fresh herbs are generally preferable for their abundance of nutrients, dried herbs also make effective and sometimes more easily available poultices. As long as you've got the right herbs, a good poultice can be made from fresh or dried herbs.

Ingredients
-a bowl
-half a cup of water
-3 tablespoons of dried nettle
-cheesecloth or cotton bandage

Directions
-Place 3 tablespoons of dried nettle into a half cup of boiling water.
-Boil for approximately 5 minutes to start breaking the dried nettle  down gently and form a more integrated mixture.
-Turn off stove and transfer ingredients to a bowl to cool so that it’s warm to the touch.
-All-natural fabric needs to be used to wrap the herbs for a poultice, and the most common are cheesecloth or cotton bandage. The fabric needs to be non-irritating and breathable, so that the herbs can heal the affected area.
-Lay the cloth flat and add the mixture to the center of the cloth.
-Fold the cloth over twice to create a pack or gather it.
-Place on the affected area for 20 minutes. (It is important that the poultice nettle touches the wound.)
-Then apply the aloe vera cream or St. John's Wort Oil/Cream on the wound.
-Repeat 3-4 times a week until healed.
